Links of Gold Title Sponsor GenRx Pharmacy

genrx 2015 title sponsorIt is with great excitement and pride that we announce Sean Lonergan and the good people of GenRx Pharmacy as our corporate Title Sponsor for the Links of Gold Golf Tournament on August 29, 2015!

This marks the second year in a row that GenRx Pharmacy has stepped up as a presenting sponsor for Links of Gold, which is presented by Rescue A Golden of Arizona (RAGofAZ) in partnership with Pennies for Pups. GenRx is a Community/Retail Pharmacy specializing in procurement, storage, dispensing and the recording of medicines. The company is based in Scottsdale, Arizona, and is distinguished by a corporate culture of service and commitment to the community.

Sean Lonergan has chosen to support Links of Gold with this $3,000.00 Title Sponsorship in large part to recognize the work of an exceptional young lady who has been a dedicated RAGofAZ volunteer for many years. Ciara Petronzio is a previous Co-Chair of the Links of Gold Committee, a member of the National Honor Society, a winning competitive golfer, an accomplished musician, and recipient of the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for the state of Arizona. Most astonishing of all, Ciara founded her own charity, Pennies for Pups, when she was just nine years old, and over the years has raised thousands of dollars for the cause of animal rescue.

As Ciara leaves this fall for the University of Alabama, Sean honors her with this Title Sponsorship as a tribute to all she has accomplished. We are most grateful to GenRx Pharmacy for their continuing support and to Ciara for her years of dedicated service.

And that’s not all . . .

We will soon be announcing the names of our generous RAGofAZ Member Sponsors! Will your name be there?

Please consider becoming a Links of Gold sponsor. Just click here to view/purchase a sponsorship or to register for golf/dinner.

Who's Your Daddy?

Whos Your DaddyRescue a Golden of Arizona is dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of Golden Retrievers in need of a forever home.  From time to time, RAGofAZ will bring in a young pregnant Golden Retriever.  We take in these Goldens, place them in a foster home until the puppies are born, and the puppies are old enough to be adopted out.  These are occasionally half Golden and do not look like Golden Retrievers, but are still considered 100% RAGofAZ dogs.  In honor of these beautiful pups, we have a new page in the 2016 Calendar to celebrate these RAGofAZ Goldens.   We have named this new feature page "Who''s Your Daddy??"

We are asking for photographs of these special dogs whose father was likely a "tall dark stranger" but has a Heart of Gold!  Won't you share their stories and photos and, for a donation of $20, have your unique RAGofAZ dog on this page? Click here to share your beautiful dog's photo and story.

Meet Holly--born with Megaesophagus--and learn how RAGofAZ has changed her life!

Sophia1

Here's one of our intakes--Holly, age 13 weeks! Holly was born with Megaesophagus---the aortic arch formed a band around her esophagus making it difficult for her to eat. (She would regurgitate most of her food). She spent a few days in a foster home with three Golden sisters, and then had a lengthy surgery at Animal Medical and Surgical Center Scottsdale by Dr. Linney. ASophia2 band was removed from around her esophagus and bougienage (ballooning) was done to her esophagus to help expand it. She is now eating and doing so much better. The doctor is very hopeful that this challenging and expensive surgery has been successful.

Holly spent several days recovering in the hospital, and has now gone home with her new Mom and Dad!

Holly's vet costs are approaching $6,000. She will still need to have her vaccinations and be spayed and have two hernias repaired when she is 6 months old, but RAGofAZ will take care of that as part of our Gold Standard.

Holly's story is made possible because of our generous supporters. We do what we do, all for the love of a golden to give them a chance at a wonderful life. Thank you!Holly DSC 4976

Thank you for making our 2015 Annual Fundraising Campaign such a success!

pictureI have been humbled and touched by the response of our members and supporters to our 2015 Annual Campaign – Nothing Special.  To date, you have surpassed our hopes and wishes by donating more than $8,500.00!

Your commitment to Rescue A Golden of Arizona means that Golden Retrievers in need will be given a second chance at the kind of life they deserve. Because of your support, we can offer medical care, life-saving surgery, and the promise of a loving “forever” home . . . to the frightened shelter dog, the pup with Parvovirus, the ailing senior dog, and the beloved pet whose owner can no longer care for him. You are helping to ensure that no Golden will ever have to know the feeling of being “nothing special.”

Thank you.  You are forever special because you care enough to give the gift of rescue.

Canine Flu Update

pictureRAGofAZ will keep you updated on incidents of the Canine Flu that has become a serious problem in the Midwest. According to scientists at Cornell University and the University of Wisconsin who have conducted additional tests, the cause of the outbreak is now believed to be due to a virus that's closely related to Asian strains of influenza A H3N2 viruses.

The CDC advises that treatment for canine influenza largely consists of supportive care that assists the dog in mounting an effective immune response. For dogs experiencing a more mild form of influenza, this may include medication to make the animal feel more comfortable, as well as fluids to ensure proper hydration.

Did you know?

pictureGolden Retrievers originated in the 1860s in Great Britain from foundation stock developed at the Scottish country estate of Lord Tweedmouth. To begin the breed, Lord Tweedmouth mated a yellow wavy-coated retriever--the only yellow in a litter of blacks--to a Tweed Water Spaniel (a breed now extinct). The resulting litter produced four bitches who, with a limited number of outcrosses, produced the foundation stock from which all of today's Golden Retrievers descend. Goldens were first brought to North America in the late 1890s and were first registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1925.

This information is provided by Golden Retriever Club of America (GRCA).

Are You Prepared?
By Scottie McGowan

The citizens and visitors of Arizona enjoyed a very mild, rainy winter.  The rain freshened the air and encouraged new growth of foliage with beautiful spring flowers.

The downside of this pleasure is that the new growth of Buffel grass and other assorted weeds are destined to die in the summer sun and become fuel for fires throughout the state.

We’ve all seen with Hurricane Katrina, last year’s wildfires, and monsoon floods what can unexpectedly happen, especially with pets, when disaster strikes and we are not prepared.

It’s time to plan for whatever contingency may occur.  Click here to read and print the attached document, EVACUATION PREPAREDNESS, to assist you with your personal planning.  Better safe than sorry.  Hoping everyone has a safe and fun summer.

Canine Flu Update

sick dog

RAGofAZ will keep you updated on incidents of the Canine Flu that has become a serious problem in the Midwest.

We have heard of some isolated cases in the Valley, but no major outbreaks. Unfortunately, all it will take is one sick dog in the shelter, doggie day care or dog park for the disease to spread exponentially. The virus is highly contagious. If a dog coughs or sneezes, vapors in the air can travel 30 feet. The virus can live on surfaces, clothing or hands for 24 hours. If your dog presents with a respiratory infection or becomes lethargic and is unwilling to eat, prompt treatment by a veterinarian is important.

We are not trying to frighten anyone--we all just need to be vigilant about the health of our dogs. Please be especially careful if you are travelling through the Midwest with your pet.

The Emotional Loop that Bonds You and your Dog

Article Copied from AKC News April 20, 2015

Your Bichon Frise leaps into your lap, settles in, and gazes adoringly into your eyes. He seems blissfully content. You cannot help but smile at him.

This feel-good interaction between you and your Bichon might begin with that gaze and point to a powerful biological mechanism that fuels the loving bond between man and dog, according to a report in the journal Science.

Researchers in Japan found that when dogs focused a prolonged gaze on their owners the dogs experienced elevated levels of oxytocin, a hormone produced in the brain that is associated with bonding and nurturing, similar to that between parent and child. The owners on the receiving end of those gazes also experienced a boost in their levels of oxytocin.

The researchers, led by Dr. Miho Nagasawa of the department of animal science at Azabu University, refer to this mutual feedback between man and dog as an "oxytocin-gaze positive loop." What that means, essentially, is that your dog's gaze makes you feel loved and your response -- a smile, a returned gaze, a caress -- makes your dog feel cherished.

The researchers measured the oxytocin levels in the urine of 30 dogs and their owners before and after they interacted. The dogs, males and females, included Golden Retrievers, Dachshunds, Poodles, a Jack Russell Terrier and a few mixed-breed dogs. Measurements showed that increases in the oxytocin were greatest in dogs who gazed at their owners for prolonged periods, which researchers defined as 100 seconds in the first five minutes of the encounter. Breed or sex has no significant influence on the changes in oxytocin levels.

In a second phase of their study, the researchers applied nasal sprays of oxytocin or saline to the dogs. Each dog was brought into a room with its owner and two strangers. The female dogs given a dose of oxytocin gazed longer at their owners, who in turn experienced a boost in their oxytocin levels. The researchers were at a loss to explain by the sex of the dog influenced the outcome, but speculated that male dogs were more protective of their owners with strangers in the room and less inclined to focus their gaze.

Evan MacLean, a researcher at the Canine Cognition Center at Duke University, wrote in a separate article in Science that the findings of Nagasawa and his team could have far-reaching implications.

"In addition to providing clues about how dogs became a part of human history, the results also help to elucidate the proximate mechanisms through which our relationships with dogs may be salubrious," he wrote. "For example, the benefits of assistance dogs for individuals with autism or posttraumatic stress disorder -- conditions for which oxytocin is currently being used as an experimental treatment -- may arise partly through these social pathways.

"In the meantime, Nagasawa (and his team) have provided more evidence that when your dog is staring at you, she may not just be after your sandwich."

Maggie: Her New Beginning

From bedraggled stray to beloved family member...
read her story and watch her video below.

Abby NKA Maggie 15 014a

Maggie, a twelve year old Golden, was found as a stray and spent two weeks at a local shelter waiting for her family to find her. She was the shelter workers' favorite. She was always happy, loving and eager to play fetch if the workers had time to throw the ball for her. She was overweight, dirty and had difficulty moving her back legs, unless she had a ball to retrieve.

A RAGofAZ volunteer rescued Maggie from the shelter for us one morning. The volunteer drove Maggie to her own home to stay until it was time to meet with a veterinarian for an appointment that afternoon. When the vet visit was over the volunteer took Maggie home again until after dinner that day. Maggie took great delight in visiting with three Golden boys and a RAGofAZ family that would play fetch with her.

Because of the wonderful team of volunteers that we have and the loving welcoming families waiting to adopt a senior golden just like her, we were able to find Maggie an amazing forever home that same day. After dinner, the volunteer drove Maggie the rest of the way to her new family who embraced her with open arms.

Over the next month Maggie was treated to a spa visit where she was groomed and pampered, and visited the vet again for X-rays, blood work to check her health condition, dental work, and medicine to help with her arthritis. We have received photos over the month documenting Maggie's progress. RAGofAZ has also reported back to the shelter, giving them an update and thanking them for letting us give Maggie her new beginning.

If you want to see how Maggie is progressing, click on the video below to watch her doing the activity she loves most, that is beside just being in the presence of her adoring new family.

President's Message

President message-216x159It’s summer in the desert and the heat is on.

Just a quick reminder that if you think it’s hot outside so do your Goldens.  They need plenty of water and a shady spot to hide until you let them back in, which should be very quickly!  The pavement gets extremely hot and, unlike you, your dogs don’t wear shoes, so please . . . get your walks in before or after the sun comes out.  While the heat is an obvious issue, a less apparent threat is Valley Fever, which is caused by a fungus that gets stirred up by windstorms or even construction.  You can lessen the exposure of this illness to your dogs by keeping them indoors as much as possible.  Most Goldens will not seriously object to being with you.

Summertime also means that our annual Board of Directors election cycle will be starting up again.  Indeed, the Nominating Committee is being formed right now.  Our next issue of Golden Tales will bring you all the details, but the time to think about running for the Board is now.  Our Golden Retrievers are smart and talented but they need humans to run this rescue so please respond when the call for nominees goes out.

Meanwhile, there is a lot going on!  Planning is in full swing for our Links of Gold Golf Tournament on September 13th at beautiful Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale.  Our annual online fundraising program, Bowl-A-Rama, just launched and runs until August 9th.  Please check out the rescue stories of our four Bowl-A-Rama canine representatives, Stevie, Willie, Tasha, and Finnegan, and help us make this campaign a success!

Finally, you will enjoy Scottie McGowan’s account of another journey to El Paso, Texas, to rescue five Golden Retrievers who needed new forever homes in sunny Arizona.  We’ll just have to teach June, Cash, Lucky, Devin and Jack how to lose that Texas accent when they bark!

Links of Gold

Links of Gold dog216x143It’s time once again for you to join us at our Links of Gold Golf Tournament on Saturday, September 13th at beautiful Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale!

This is the signature fundraising event of the year for Rescue A Golden of Arizona.  Your tails will be wagging when you tee off on Troon North’s breathtaking Monument course.  This year we are featuring a hole-in-one contest sponsored by Audi North Scottsdale!  How many Goldens can you fit in your new Audi?!  More of a socialite than a golfer? No problem!  Join us at 5:30 PM for “Yappy Hour” and dinner. This is your opportunity to retrieve your raffle tickets and get to know other Golden enthusiasts!  Yappy Hour will be followed by a sensational Italian buffet dinner featuring chicken piccata, pastas, salad, and desserts.  And there will be home-baked doggie treats for the pups!

We just can’t stop howling about this year’s raffle prizes!  We’ve been barking up all the right trees and have some spectacular items that you might win!  We continue to seek donations for our raffle, so please let us know if you have additional items you can fetch for the event!  Because we love to retrieve!  Click here for details or to register.

Bowl-A-Rama

Bowlarama216x287Have you ever seen a Golden Retriever bowl?

Yes, they love bowling! On Saturday, August 9th, the entire animal rescue community in the Phoenix metro area will gather for some friendly bowling competition and to help raise funds for our cause (two-footed bowlers only).  Rescue A Golden of Arizona (RAGofAZ) has enthusiastically supported Bowl-A-Rama for many years, and it has become a significant fundraiser.  In fact, every dollar we raise goes directly into our RAGofAZ treasury to help pay our vet bills and support our mission!

You can help by making a donation in honor of one of four fabulous Bowl-A-Rama Golden Retrievers: Stevie, Willie, Tasha and Finnegan. Their rescue stories will amaze and inspire you! Just click here to check out their photos and read how RAGofAZ came to their rescue. Ask your friends, family and colleagues to contribute too, and help make 2014 Bowl-A-Rama a howling success! Click here to donate.

Barnes & Noble Gift Wrap 2014

Gift-wrap216x216Yes, it’s Christmas in July!

We may be locked into triple digits outside but here inside at RAGofAZ we are already planning our holiday gift wrapping program with Barnes and Noble Booksellers.  In fact, we have dates booked at B&N locations in Arrowhead (Bell/77th in Peoria), Happy Valley (off I-17), and Goodyear (Litchfield/McDowell). We also expect to be back at Crossroads B&N in Gilbert, and we’re on the hunt for some great locations in Tucson too.  Check out the dates scheduled so far in the “Mark Your Calendar” section at the end of this newsletter.  And get ready to “bring the bling” this holiday season!

Woof Down Lunch

Courthouse Square in Prescott was the place to be on Saturday, June 28th, when hundreds of animal welfare groups gathered with their furry – or not so furry – friends for some eats, drinks, and play time.

RAGofAZ’s northern contingent of volunteers manned the Rescue A Golden of Arizona booth and promoted our cause with great success.  Many thanks to Lynn and Daryl Lassen who brought Gamer and Honey, Ruth Ann Steffes with Tasha and Sedona, Robin Fox with Spirit, Becky Wetzel with Maddie, and Liz Sawtschenko, who trekked up from the Valley with her Gus.

 President's Message

We have a number of projects ramping up so I’m happy to bring you up to date.

First, let me thank everyone who submitted a photo of their dog for our  Cutest Golden Contest.  These are 50 of the coolest looking Goldens you’ve ever seen so please plan to cast your votes early and often.  Details below . . . please help us make this the most successful Cutest Golden Contest ever.  Kudos to Dean Mills, who developed our very first contest years ago and is still working diligently to make it more fun every year.  I personally appreciate your dedication – it’s an example for all of us.

Next up – our  Links of Gold Golf Committee is hard at work planning our biggest fundraising event of the year under the leadership of new Chairperson Julie Thompson. For some time, you’ve been asking me why we have not reached out to the business community in an effort to obtain some large-dollar sponsorships for Links of Gold.  I’m very pleased to tell you that this is precisely what Julie and her team are doing.  In addition to new sponsorship opportunities, we’ve also got a fantastic new menu featuring Chicken Piccata!  Check out the details below.

Tee shirts with our new logo have arrived and are now available on our website (in both men’s and ladies’ sizes) and they look great.  Other items are also available through Lands’ End so please see info and link below.

Finally, I want to express my personal gratitude to all of you who have responded to our 3rd Annual Fundraising Campaign: The  Seasons of Rescue.  Your dollars are helping us to provide life saving care to injured and sick Goldens like Snowy and Rudy.  I am always moved by your generous commitment to our cause (link to donate is shown below).  And there is still time to contribute.  Your donation to our Annual Campaign is welcome any month of the year – because every season is the season of rescue.

More to come, I’ll keep you posted.

Golden Tales June 2014

June14 masthead

 President's Message

I can hardly believe that the year is nearly half gone and summer is upon us.  At this time of year, we must diligently protect our Golden Retrievers from the brutal desert sun.  Give them plenty of water, walk them during the coolest part of the day or evening, and watch out for those hot pavements.

As your President, summertime always means that we must begin to focus on Board elections.  This year poses some special challenges in staffing our Board of Directors that I want to highlight early on.  At this moment, we already have three vacancies on our Board: Director of Events, Director of Golden Operations, and Director of Southern Member & Volunteer Activities.  Additionally, we have five Board members whose terms will expire in October – President, Secretary, Directors of Fundraising, Golden Rescue, and Southern K-9 Operations – and some of these incumbents do not plan to run for re-election.  If you do the math, you can see where this is going.

Historically, it has always been difficult to recruit volunteers who are willing to commit the time and energy to Board service.  Our Board has worked relentlessly to develop a strong process for succession planning, and we are ready to mentor and support potential Board members for as long as needed.  But we must have candidates to take the reins . . . and you could be among them!  The most important talent you need is a willingness to learn.  If you would like to know more about Board service, please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  I would be happy to familiarize you with the duties of Board members and answer your questions.

I’m sure you understand and share my concerns.  It would be a shame to have worked so hard to set our organization on a path to fiscal sustainability and sound governance, only to see our progress halted because of a leadership void.  Please step up and become one of the leaders who will fill that void.  If not you, then who?
