"Hello, I'm Walter!"

“Hello, I’m Walter

Walter3

I’m nearly 12 years old and thanks to RAGofAZ I’m still here to tell my story.

It began when the nice folks at the Yavapai Humane Society in Prescott found me, sick and starving, and took me in. I guess they thought I was a little too sick for them to deal with so they called RAGofAZ and Aunt Robin and Aunt Ruthann came to get me. Between the shots they gave me and the infections in my ears and chest I guess I was a bit out of it. I did have a brief run in with one of Aunt Robin’s cats but I guess they forgave me. The punishment wasn’t too bad.
Walter2

Things got a little scary when they took me to the vet the next day and they learned that I had two ear infections, pneumonia and three masses in my back end. Everyone was wondering if I was going to make it but I said “to heck with that. I’m a tough old boy.” They gave me some meds and my lungs and ears cleared up in a hurry…and did I mention that the food was pretty good at Aunt Robin’s. Everyone was so nice and seemed so happy that I was doing so well.

After recovering for a while I was moved to a nice new home – no cats for me to get into trouble with – and RAG started to wonder about those masses in my rear end. They seemed surprised when the first doctor they took me to couldn’t find them. I was then moved to another new home and another vet and they too poked and prodded and took an x-ray and couldn’t find anything, either. Everyone seemed really amazed that the masses had vanished but all I cared about was that the vet told my foster mom to feed me 4 times a day until I put some weight on. I really liked him! He also gave me some pills to help my arthritis that wouldn’t upset my stomach and in no time at all I was feeling like my old self and enjoying my walks.

Walter1Once they decided that I didn’t have something called cancer after all they started looking for a permanent home for me. You might think that it would take a lot of time to find a spot for an old boy like me but the fact is some nice new people came over to meet me and pet me at my foster mom’s house before I was even medically released for adoption. One more visit to the vet…who didn’t say anything about feeding me less (I told you I liked him!) and I was good to go. Would you believe, the very next day I was off to my new home in Scottsdale where things are looking pretty good for this old dog who wouldn’t give up. Thanks RAGofAZ. I couldn’t have done it without you.”

If you already have purchased your beautiful 2017 RAGofAZ Calendar please circle September 9, for the 2017 Links of Gold. We have already started planning for next year’s event!

Finally, we will shortly be asking for you to join in the fun and volunteer at the various Holiday Gift Wrap locations around the Valley.

Vet Care Tip of the Month: Parvovirus

pictureTwo years ago I had been President for only a couple of weeks when I heard that a breeder had puppies in two litters that had contracted the Parvovirus. RAGofAZ volunteers reacted immediately after a decision was made to attempt to save as many of these puppies as possible.

By now most of you know the outcome; through a herculean effort of the team of veterinarians and RAGofAZ volunteers there are now five healthy two-year-old Goldens out there in forever homes.

The follow article was posted on our website recently. Here is a reminder of what could be potentially a fatal virus. read more

"Old Age is not a Disease"

pictureFrom an original article from Harmony Holistic Veterinary care by Delia Macdonald D.V.M. of Prescott, AZ

Being old doesn’t mean you should hurt all the time. Being old shouldn't imply that you can't get up or move in relative comfort. Being old doesn’t mean loose stool or periodic episodes of vomiting. We would be very concerned if we saw these symptoms in a young animal! Why do we ignore them in an old one?

As a veterinarian, it is my job to help educate owners to best support their geriatric pet friends. To this end, I'd like to share three lessons I've learned: pain is not normal, attitude matters, and food matters. I'll finish up with my takeaways for elderly pet care. read more

Bark in the Park Tucson 2016 Schedule of Events

Red 14-046

WHEN GOD WAS HANDING OUT "YOUNG AT HEART" HE GAVE RED AN EXTRA DOSE

Red 14-046

Red is a handsome 9 year old male Golden Retriever looking for a new pal. He would like to be your "top dog," so he is looking for a family who have no pets. Older kids (over 15) would be OK, but not necessary.

Red's foster says, "Red loves to be petted and enjoys being with you whenever you are home."

Don't let his age fool you.... Red still has energy to spare. He loves to go on his daily walks and loves to run and play. Car rides are fun too!

Red knows several commands: come, sit, stay & high five - he is a very smart boy.

Advantages of adopting this 9 year old:
Red is already housebroken, he walks well on a leash, he does "alert" barking when someone comes to the door, you can leave him for hours at a time with no worries.

If you would like a new friend who will devote his world to you, Red is your guy.

With patience to let Red adjust to his new surroundings, he will be the best pal you could ever hope for.

So many people want to adopt a Golden puppy.... please consider adopting a "senior" Golden. Seniors will: give you love and companionship without the hassles of having a younger dog. They are housebroken, finished with the chewing and teething stage and most know several commands. And most important, a "senior" Golden will love you unconditionally for opening your heart and home to them.

To learn more about Red, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Thank you.

Golden Tales October 2014

October Masthead

 President's Message

Goodbye

I have never been a fan of the long goodbye, so I will keep my final President’s message brief.

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your President for the past three years. I especially want to recognize and thank everyone who has served on the Board of Directors during my term for your dedication, hard work, and wise counsel. Under your tutelage, I learned the ins and outs of rescue operations, good governance, focused fundraising, prudent cost-cutting, and planning for the future.

It is with some relief that I say we have succeeded in putting RAGofAZ on the path to fiscal sustainability and stable leadership. Because of your generosity – the members who have supported us with your donation dollars, volunteer hours, and by coming out to our events – that we can look forward to rescuing Golden Retrievers in need for years to come. Of course, this can happen only if we continue to plan for a seamless transition of leadership.

That is why I am not going anywhere. I will be right here to work with our new President, and support him in any way I can. He has an excellent Board to partner with him and teach him the ropes as they did for me.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Golden Harvest on October 17th and at our Annual Meeting on October 26th where I can thank you personally for your loyalty and support. This has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I feel humble and grateful that you entrusted me with this position.

Signing off . . .

Bob

Thank you for making Links of Gold our biggest success yet!

Golf

On behalf of Chairperson Julie Thompson and the entire Links of Gold planning committee, thank you to everyone who attended or supported our Links of Gold Golf Tournament on September 13th! Because of your enthusiasm and generosity, we raised nearly $19,000.00 to help further the cause of Golden Retriever rescue. The feedback we’ve received from the golfers and dinner attendees has been so positive – everyone loved the Monument Course at Troon North, enjoyed the delicious buffet dinner, and had a wonderful time winning fantastic raffle prizes!

Thank you for making this the most successful fundraiser of the year!

A good time was had by all at Dogtoberfest!

Dogtoberfest

With sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s, Courthouse Square in Prescott offered a cool retreat to everyone who made their way to Dogtoberfest on October 5th! Our RAGofAZ booth was populated by many of our two-footed and four-footed friends, who greeted passers-by and talked up the joys of animal adoption. This annual event is always a wonderful way to spend a day, so if you didn’t make it this year, we hope you’ll plan on joining us in 2015. Many thanks to our dedicated Prescott team of volunteers for making our participation in this worthwhile event a success!

Seize the Day

Seize the Day, Impact the Future

Date:  Saturday, October 5th
Time:  10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Place:  Reid Park, Tucson

It is a special privilege to be invited to participate in the Tucson Association of Realtors special fund-raising event.  Our very own RAGofAZ volunteer, Tricia Hooper, nominated us for this event.

We need all the help we can get.  Let’s support Tricia with a good showing. There are opportunities to win some money as one of the top three organizations with the most visitors.  So even if you can’t stay, come by and visit and be counted.

Our Ambassadogs will don their vests to collect donations.

Please contact me to let me know what time you and your Golden(s) can be there or to ask questions.  Click here for a Reid Park map. See below for more information.

Many thanks for your participation.

3000 golden

Celebrating RAGofAZ 3000th Golden—Charlie!

Charlie was surrendered to RAGofAZ in July as his family was not coping well with the exuberance a 7 month old Golden Retriever displays. After a brief stay in a foster home for assessment and vetting, Charlie began his journey with a three part relay from Prescott, to Anthem, to Casa Grande and, finally, arriving at his new home in Tucson. His new mom quickly fell in love with him and he joined a pack of 3 canine siblings, goats and horses. Charlie’s rescue was recently celebrated at Golden Harvest in Tempe on October 19th where he arrived in an open convertible. Tucson members will have an opportunity to meet Charlie on November 10th at Bark in the Park at Reid Park. RAGofAZ is very proud and gratified to have rescued so many Goldens over the years and delighted to celebrate the adoption of Golden #3000!
