Golden Tales April 2017

President's Message

OMG, have you seen the Golden Selfies?? This year’s Cutest Golden Contest is up and running on our web site. The voting restarts every week. Even though the votes are only a buck each, I’m going to be broke in no time, as there are some really cuties in the contest. You have to check them out!!

Last year, your Board held their Retreat in March. At this retreat we reviewed all of our Policies and Procedures and noted how outdated they had become. Some had not been revised or updated in over 6 years. So, we took on the challenge to get these revised and current for our teams. Well, it has taken over a year to get it all done and we should have them ready for distribution to all our team members by the end of March. Policies & Procedures for Intake, Home Visit, Placement, Transport, Vet Care, Vet Records, Follow Up, Behavior, Adoption, Woof Line, Microchip, Membership, Events, Fundraising, Operating Procedures, Business Plan, and Database. Thanks to all of our Directors and Coordinator who put in a lot of work to these documents.

Make sure you mark your calendars for our upcoming Links of Gold Golf Tournament. Our Chairman, Chris Brant, has his committee in place and their first meeting was kicked off this month. The date is in place for September 9th, 1:45 PM, Troon North Golf Club, Scottsdale. So, if you play golf or have friends that are golfers, plan on joining in on the fun. See more information here.

Reading Pet Food Labels

Shared from Animal Wellness Magazine

Pet food labels are a rich source of information for those who know how to read them. While they don’t tell you everything about the food, they do provide guidelines for comparison shopping.

Packaged pet food is a great convenience, but how do you know you’re getting a good quality product? The best way is to learn how to read the labels, but if you’re like most people, you probably find the terminology more than a little confusing, if not downright indecipherable. For example, how does “meat” differ from “meat meal”? And what the heck is “animal digest?” Which ingredients are healthy choices, and which should you avoid?read more

Why does my Dog Take So Long to Decide Where to Poop?

Reprinted from

You’re walking your dog when she stops to sniff the grass. This is it! You whip out your sweet biodegradable poop bags, you wait—and then you wait some more, as your dog sniffs and circles and sniffs again.

All dogs poop, but some take a lot longer to pick a spot than others. Does your dog have to sniff every fence post before pooping? It may surprise you to learn that there’s science behind her dawdling. From territorial strategy to the alignment of the earth’s magnetic poles, your dog has good reasons for taking her time.  read more

Health & Wellness: Benadryl for Dogs

Anna Burke | August 10, 2016 AKC Newsletter

The temptation to reach into our medicine cabinets to treat our pets can be very dangerous. Humans and dogs react very differently to medications, which is why veterinarians caution dog owners against making independent decisions about how to medicate their animals. However, some human medications are safe for use with dogs, as long as they are used appropriately.

Veterinarians use Benadryl for dogs on a regular basis to treat allergies, travel anxiety, and motion sickness. While you should always consult with your veterinarian before giving your dog a human medication, here is what you need to know about using Benadryl for dogs. read more

A message from Steve's new family

We can not explain how thrilled we are to have our new family member "Steve." We love him dearly. It is just like he knows who we are and has melted my husband Bob's heart. It is a match that is so hard to explain.

When we walk for instance, Bob has a scooter. He walks on his harness and leash with me and along Bob's side as we go. He looks back to be sure I am still Steve 15 012cthere and keeps walking. It is a hoot to see the two of them. He melts the hearts along the way and we just chuckle knowing he has us as his new family.
We do not know how to express our deepest appreciation to all of you to have helped us with this process. Please know it is a HUGE blessing and we are forever grateful. We will be in touch often and be sure to let you know of our milestones as we go. So far EVERYTHING is perfect in every aspect and know it will not end.

The happiest new parents in the world!
Bob & Kay

Hello Rescue A Golden of Arizona members and friends - I am Harlow, a beautiful sweet 7 year old Golden girl looking for a forever home. I love to be the center of attention, so would rather be your only pal. I would be so happy to have a fenced in yard where I can meander around and catch all the sounds and smells. And either no pool or a fenced pool.

Did I mention that I am almost blind? I can see a little in the light, but still need some help navigating the house and yard until I learn where everything is located. After that, I am good to go, and can get around just like any other dog. Would you give me a chance? I can love you and be your Golden pal forever!!!! One request.......promise not to move the furniture too often...once I get the lay of the land - I can be a great addition to your family.

Golden Tales April 2014

President's Message

I’m sure you’ve been wondering where we’ve been these past few months.  And you can’t help but notice that this edition of Golden Tales not only has a new look but is somewhat shorter than the last version, which was . . . well, 26 pages.  We’ve heard from many of you that the days of long newsletters are over, and also that you would like to hear from us more frequently.  So we’ll bring you a shorter e-newsletter every month to keep you informed about all things Golden.  You will notice links to full stories, photos and website pages so you can navigate easily to items that interest you.  And we’ll keep our Mark Your Calendar feature updated so you won’t miss a single event.

The changes you see – most noticeably our new logo – have been brought to you by our Rebranding Committee, Martha Heier, Sue Norton-Scott and Chairperson Judy Smith (thank you all!).  They have put in yeoman’s hours designing new tee shirts and banners, and updating our forms and correspondence to give us a consistent “brand.”  And we’ve done it on a shoestring budget.  Read more about rebranding in the next article, and look for details on ordering new items in future editions of Golden Tales.

As many of you know, the number of Golden Retrievers coming into rescue has diminished in recent months, and this is true across the country.  We hope this is a reflection of the improving economy and that more dogs are able to remain in their homes.  What this means, of course, is that approved families are waiting longer for dogs.  We know this can be frustrating, so please help us communicate the reason for the extended wait whenever you are asked about it.

Finally, ‘tis the season for our Annual Fundraising Campaign – and this year’s theme is The Seasons of Rescue.  We are very grateful for your generous support in previous campaigns, and I want to thank you in advance for contributing again this year.  It’s only because of your commitment that we are able to do what we do.

I’m looking forward to our monthly chats!  I’ll be back again next month.

Bob Schillaci, President
