President's Message

pictureDid you ever hear of the Prescott Woof Down Lunch and do you know what it’s all about?
As you know there are numerous opportunities to volunteer during the year to support our organization. After Thanksgiving there are chances to help raise important funds when we gather together for Gift Wrapping in coordination with various Barnes and Noble Stores around the Valley. I hope that you will put that thought in the back of your mind so when we ask for volunteers you will, perhaps for the first time, be the ones that step forward. We have found that the larger the quantity of members who volunteer for at least one or two of these Gift Wrapping dates the easier it is on the regular valiant core of volunteers.

These pre-Christmas events are of course way in the future. There are other events (including Links of Gold, that you can read about below in this month’s Golden Tales) that we will regularly advertise on the website. You don’t have to have a personal invitation to volunteer, just come on out and enjoy the company of fellow members with that same love in their hearts for Golden Retrievers.

With that in mind you might have seen that something in Prescott was happening last Saturday that drew members from as far away as Tucson as well as others from the Valley. They joined the dedicated crowd of local volunteers from Yavapai County. We had a great gathering of Goldens and RAG Members at our booth in downtown Prescott for the Annual Woof Down Lunch

Please do not hesitate next June to either travel up to Prescott for the weekend or just make a day trip to get a change of scenery. While in Prescott we would love for you to volunteer at our booth for a few hours and then while in the town square you would also want to wander over and visit the other interesting exhibits that are coordinated by the organizers. Trophies were given out for such competitors as the best dog trick, the best ears, the best smile and the cutest dog, By the way, the best ears trophy was won by one of our Ambassadogs. There was also music in the park, great food, along with demonstrations presented by the Prescott Police and the Yavapai Search and Rescue.  Apart from many different dog breed rescues there were other exhibits of note, for example, a Dog Training Demonstration by Dandydogs and another group called Animal Disaster Services whose popular motto is, “Don’t Leave Home Without Us”.

Before I close I must remind you that the average temperature at this time in Phoenix is over 100 degrees but under the shade of the trees in the historic County Courthouse Park in downtown Prescott the temperature was a delightful 70 degrees. So next June we hope to see you and your Golden companions at the Woof Down Lunch in Prescott!

Would you like your Ambassadog or Fuzzy Friend to be in our 2016 Calendar?

pictureThis year we have two special ways to honor your companions:

Ambassadogs:  Make a $20 donation and submit a picture of your Ambassadog, whether Golden or not.  Ambassadogs have "Hearts of Gold" to be helping out at our events to raise awareness for Rescue a Golden of AZ and their Golden brother or sister.  We wanted to make sure to show them how much they are appreciated.  So, thank you Ambassadogs!

Fuzzy Friends: We have not overlooked your Fuzzy (or not so Fuzzy) Friends, and they can also be in our calendar for a $20 donation.  Show off all your pets and join in the fun.  What a wonderful keepsake coming your way in our 2016 Hearts of Gold Calendar!

Announcing GenRx Pharmacy as our Links of Gold Title Sponsor!

President’s Message : 2015 Links of Gold Golf Tournament

pictureThe Links of Gold Golf Tournament and Dinner has been growing in size over the years, and with your help this year’s event will be the most successful ever. If you haven’t already marked Saturday, August 29, 2015 on your calendar with a big golden ring please do so now. After you register for this event, I ask you to carry out one more important task for your organization.

Whether you golf or not, please reach out to three or four of your golfing friends and associates and ask them to support this very worthy cause by making up a foursome to play at Troon North.  This year we have reserved the beautiful Pinnacle Course exclusively for our tournament, which presents us with the perfect opportunity to increase the number of our golfers on the course.  At only $500.00 per foursome it’s a deal – and four delicious buffet dinners are included.  (Click here for a printable registration form.)

If just ten members are able to persuade a friend to gather up a foursome, it would make an incredible difference . . . because more golfers on August 29th means more Goldens will receive our help in their hour of need.

Here is everything you need to know!

What:      Links of Gold Golf Tournament and Dinner
When:     Saturday, August 29, 2015  – 1:30 shot gun start,

In closing, I would like to thank our sponsors for their generosity and the Links of Gold planning committee, led by Judi Schillaci, for their dedicated efforts.

I look forward to meeting you personally at Links of Gold!

Thank you to the 2016 Hearts of Gold Calendar Committee

On behalf of the Rescue A Golden of Arizona organization I want to thank all those who have toiled so hard and put in so many hours on the creation of the 2016 Hearts of Gold Calendar. Members of the committee have come up with some novel ideas for our 2016 calendar and like you, I am anxiously awaiting a sneak preview of the production. I hear that there is still much work to be done before the new calendar goes to print in the next two months. RAG also appreciates all the owners and their Golden companions that took part in the Cutest Golden Competition, for without their participation this project could not be a success.

Mason

We sent out an earlier email about our rescue boy, Mason.  Mason was only two years old and lost his battle to a very aggressive form of osteosarcoma.  Despite our best efforts and that of our veterinary partner, we reluctantly sent Mason to the Rainbow Bridge.  We are fortunate that most of our rescue stories end happily.  However, when a rescue like RAGofAZ is willing to take in any dog despite health problems, there are going to be dogs like Mason that we cannot help.

Right now, we have two senior Goldens named Cory and Stanley.  Cory and Stanley both

came into rescue with inoperable cancers. However, we are lucky to have wonderful foster families who are willing to give hospice care to Goldens like this whom we are unable
to place in forever homes, but who are not ready to make their final journey.  Cory has been with a foster since February and continues to do surprisingly well—a true testament to her loving care and zest for life.  Stanley as well is receiving chemotherapy for his cancer and enjoys swimming at his foster home where he has been since April.  So even these dogs are success stories of a sort.  We will continue to rescue Goldens regardless of their medical needs and offer them the best that we can to restore them to good health.

VANTAGE WEST CREDIT UNION GOES GOLDEN

Each quarter, Vantage West Credit Union’s employees have a jeans day fund raiser to support a charity. Kelly Burch, a Tucson volunteer and credit union employee at a local branch, kindly nominated Rescue A Golden of Arizona (RAGofAZ) for the last quarter.
We were ecstatic when Kelly called to make an appointment to present us with a check for $970.00. Goldens Jake and Morgan proudly joined me at the Nexus Tucson Branch to accept the check on behalf of RAGofAZ.
Heartfelt gratitude to Vantage West Credit Union for its community outreach, to Kelly for nominating RAGofAZ, and to all of its employees who participated in this fund raiser. Many Goldens will benefit from the outpouring of generosity.

Mac Mindy 2A well-socialized and secure puppy is a happy puppy. This means helping him early on to feel that the world is a fun and safe place to be—whether encountering other dogs, children, or strangers on the street. Ideally, your pup will be content in any setting, and even when you’re not home. Give him plenty of stimulation, socialization, and encouragement or you will risk problems such as aggressive or fearful behavior, excessive barking, and separation anxiety.

Take your puppy to a dog park regularly, but don’t overstimulate him. And make sure to follow these safety/etiquette tips. If he doesn't enjoy the experience, though, don’t force him into it. Keep his social periods brief at first, so as not to overdo it. (Don’t allow socialization before he is fully immunized.) And always pick up after your dog, wherever you go.

To discourage separation anxiety—which often results in puppies engaging in destructive behavior—supply your pup with chew toys to keep him appropriately occupied in your absence. You’ll want to make sure that both his teeth and mind are busy.

Sometimes dogs need to work off steam in ways you don’t have time to provide. Consider signing your dog up at a dog daycare center, if there is one in the neighborhood, or hire a dog walker to take your pup on an extended walk to burn off energy.

If your puppy meets another dog on the street or at the dog park who seems aggressive, calmly lead your dog away. Never try to force an interaction that could turn dangerous.

At the earliest opportunity, take your puppy for a brief ride in the car. Stop by the vet’s office, just for a visit and a treat, so he considers it a positive place to spend time.

Because puppies sometimes see kids as equals, they may react to them in unpredictable ways. Put your pup into a “sit” or “down” when meeting toddlers or babies. He should never be permitted to jump on them.

ParvoPups at Play 1Here’s a fun way for you and your pup to have fun before the weather gets cold: Host a play date! Your dog will enjoy playing with other dogs (and learn valuable social skills at the same time), and you will enjoy hanging out with the other human beings (and, of course, the puppies).

Keep your guest list small at first—maybe even just two or three other puppies. You can expand as your pup matures. And until your dog is used to loud noises, don’t invite loud people. Invite your calmer, quieter friends, at least at first. As for the puppies, make sure they are all up-to-date on vaccinations, and that they are fairly calm and friendly. And keep them on a leash at all times!

Your house is the best place to host your first few parties, since you can control the environment and avoid the distractions that come with a park or other public venue. During the party, don’t forget to let the pups take potty breaks every 20 minutes (you might want to set a timer). In fact, the first few parties can end at 20 or 30 minutes. Eventually they might last as long as an hour.Knixy

If you also have plenty of healthy treats on hand for the adorable playmates—both canine and human—you (and your play dates) will be a hit!

Find out some great tips on socializing puppies here.
