President's Message

pictureThis will be a shorter Golden Tales than normal as many of you will have much on your plate and many will be busy getting ready for Christmas and the holidays. Another Golden Tales will be forthcoming before the end of the year.

You will receive this message just in time for a last reminder that we are still looking for volunteers to help with the final three days of Gift Wrap, December 22, 23, 24. The regulars will be out there but through experience we know the more individuals and Goldens that are present at the sites the more successful financially will be the fundraiser. The coordinators and their teams of volunteers have made a terrific start to the gift wrap season, please join the band. We would love to see some new faces at the sites. You can go online and sign up right away for an hour or two. Results of the Gift Wrap efforts will be shared shortly after the holidays.

On behalf of the Board of Directors I want to thank you all for supporting the organization over the last year. I also want to wish you and your family members (of both two and four legs) a merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday season along with a happy and healthy New Year.

Chris P P Brant
President, RAGofAZ

Membership Dues are Tax Deductible, just as are Cash Donations to RAGofAZ

pictureFederal regulations state that membership dues to an organization like ours are charitable contributions and can be declared as a deduction on your tax returns.

The information supplied by us in the past was inaccurate and so we our pleased to correct the error. With the end of the tax year (December 31) upon us you might consider this a good time to renew your membership or to make a charitable donation to Rescue A Golden of Arizona in the name of a beloved pet or family member.

Holiday Merchandise

The RAGofAZ calendars are selling fast but we still have stock for last minute gifts. Now that you have received that Christmas cake from Aunt Edith you can show your appreciation by going online and providing her address, so she can have one of these beautiful calendars hanging in her kitchen for all of 2016.

It seems many of you saw the beautiful note cards that we had printed recently. The first batch sold out almost immediately. We have rushed through a second printing and we will be restocked this weekend ready for your online purchases

If you need an extra gift for a relative or friend, the RAGofAZ shirts and hats are as always available to purchase online.

Abby and Zander are now waiting at the Rainbow Bridge.

Oren retired in 2012, after working in the architectural field of commercial interior design for forty-eight years. He was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, and left in 1979 for Los Angeles. The dogs do love to help people and are just the best of medicine!

Carol says, “I got involved in all of this, all for the Love of a Golden.” Yes that sentiment is so true! I am now on my 4th Golden and I love them all. There is just something about this breed, those Goldens’ eyes, they look right into your soul. To everyone who has loved a Golden, you know what I mean.” Carol wanted to be sure to thank you letting her help RAGofAZ and getting to know your Goldens!

Scottie McGowan - Director of Golden Rescue

scottie mcgowan golden rescueAfter the passing of Ed Karsten, Scottie McGowan was asked by the Executive Board members to move into the position of Director of Golden Rescue. Scottie had worked closely with Ed for several years, developing her own broad scope of experience, that made her ideally suited to take over the position.

Scottie and her husband, Ken, moved to Tucson in 1997. She retired in 2003 after serving 30 years in the USAF. That same year, they also adopted their first rescue Golden, Chad, and they became volunteers. When Chad went to the Rainbow Bridge in January 2009, she joined the Intake Team in his memory. Since then, Scottie has served as a member of the Home Visit, Transport, and Transport Coordinator Teams. She was also appointed as the Intake Team Coordinator and the Assistant Transport Coordinator.

Nancy Baker - Director of Golden Operations

Nancy Baker Golden OperationsNancy Baker has been associated with Rescue A Golden of Arizona for over four years now. Nancy and her husband, Oelando, began their volunteering by being a foster family. They branched out into transporting dogs in addition to the fostering. When necessary they took the Goldens in their care to Crossroads Vet Hospital in Gilbert. Eventually Nancy took over the position of Vet Care Liaison for Crossroads which evolved into becoming the Vet Care Manager and Liaison to Animal Medical and Surgical Center in Scottsdale.

Just over a year ago Nancy left her vet assignments to serve on the Board. She was elected to the position of Director of Golden Operations. Nancy describes her important responsibilities and also how she feels about her fellow workers, “I oversee very talented and dedicated coordinators organizing foster volunteers, placement, vet care, microchips and follow-up teams. It is an honor to work with so many amazing dog loving like-minded people.”

Oelando and Nancy have two grown daughters and two fur grandbabies. They have had many dogs over the years. They share that they loved them all but the Goldens of course were their favorites. They adopted their first RAGofAZ Golden girl Angel in June 2014. Angel has a younger Golden sister named Cozy. Both dogs participate as RAGofAZ ambassadors in various Meet and Greets and other events.

Nancy expresses how it is her great pleasure to serve in her current position as Director of Golden Operations because of her passion for this wonderful breed, and to help the organization continue to rescue and successfully rehome Goldens.
